Isuzu UTE Australia has unveiled its boldest version of its MU-X seven-seater yet in the form of the limited-run Onyx Edition which not only brings some visual enhancements but also some added tech to bring it closer in-line with the all-new D-Max.

Based on the range-topping MU-X LS-T, which you can read our review of here, the Onyx Edition is set to be limited to just 420 units and offered in just two colours – Obsidian Grey Mica, or Silky White Pearl.

Visually, the Onyx Edition is set apart from the regular model with shadow chrome treatments across the front grill and tailgate, along with some gloss black elements and a more aggressive chin spoiler design at the front.

Additionally, the wing mirrors are now body-coloured, rather than chrome, and the sidesteps are finished in gloss black.

However, it’s the technology the Onyx Edition adds that will please most, as while the MU-X is based on the last-gen D-Max model, this limited-run variant brings it closer to the standard set by the all-new 2021 D-Max – which you can read the full pricing and specification details for here, and our launch review of here.

Not only are dusk-sensing Bi-LED headlights now fitted, but an entirely new 6.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system is also added, and while it may have a smaller screen than that in even the base-model 2021 D-Max, it does add integrated satellite navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay, wired Android Auto, and DAB+ digital radio.

Quilted leather upholstery is also added inside where the Onyx Edition otherwise benefits from the same appointments as the MU-X LS-T, meaning a roof-mounted 10-inch DVD screen, eight-speaker surround sound audio system, and ambient interior lighting still remain as standard.

Mechanically, the MU-X remains unchanged from the regular MU-X, which features the older ‘4JJ1’ 3.0-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel engine with 130kW and 430Nm, with an Aisin six-speed automatic transmission as standard.

With it looking like a new MU-X based on the all-new D-Max should be on the horizon for sometime within the coming year or so – you’ll find leaked patent images all over the internet already – it looks like this limited-run update should keep the MU-X fighting just long enough for it to come along.
